A specially commissioned 50-hour durational performance by renowned Indian artist Nikhil Chopra entitled “Give Me Your Blood and I Will Give You Freedom” will be one of the highlights of the 2014 Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA). In “Give Me Your Blood and I Will Give You Freedom”Chopra will create a vivid expression of India’s bloody fight to free itself from 200 years of British rule by transforming a white canvas into breathtaking landscapes of black ink – a menacing metaphorical battleground. The title of the work is the famous rallying cry of the charismatic freedom fighter Subhas Chandra Bose who was one of the leaders of India’s fight for freedom. His cry was answered by a group of women who formed the all-female combat army, the Rani of Jhansi Regiment. Assuming the character of a female warrior named Jhansi, who must be prepared to transform, shed her skin, and “spill”her blood in order to seek her freedom, Chopra will flesh out the ominous passage of a bloody battle across 50 continuous hours, emerging as a victorious black monster in the climatic finale. The audience will be free to come and go throughout the duration of the performance which is best experienced over multiple visits during the 50 hours of the performance from 7pm, August 15 to 9pm, August 17.
